I have a 2009 Lincoln MKX which has 5,300 miles. Twice now while driving there has been a very loud "pop" from the radio after which there then is absolutely no audio. Everything else works with the sound system including the Microsoft sync, I just don't have any sound. If I then stop, turn of the engine and restart, everything works fine.

I suspect the audio amplifier has a problem, when this happens its very very loud as though the speakers have been hit with a hammer. I sharp pop sound and then no audio?

Any ideas?

I have had the same thing happen twice in my 2009 MKX. So loud that it sounds as if someone has shot a gun in the car. Took it to the dealer after the first time and they did not have a clue. Not in a hurry to take it in again because little faith they will fix it. Other than this and also the high pitched sound coming from the rear mentioned in another thread I have had no other problems and am very happy withthe vehicle.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think I was the only one out there with this problem. With that said, I took the car in for its last checkup and mentioned the loud blast of the sound system. They ran some check and indicated thaey could not find anything wrong and if it happened again to drive it in if I'm near the dealership. Well since then it hasn't happened again and it now going on a couple of months, so maybe it was just an isolated occurance. Hope so - Otherwise I love the car. Very satisfied with the vehicle and the dealership service.

Add my name to the sonic boom list - I thought someone had fired a gun at me while I was driving. First time it happened, all sound went off though the radio appeared as being on. Turn off engine, turn back on again and everything worked fine.

Reported it to local dealer - said if it happens again, bring it in. A month later, sonic boom # 2, so I drove it to the dealer without turning car off. Told me reported problems in earlier models but nothing in 2010. Will order new amplifier but none showing available in North America so might be a month before parts arrive. (Probably no parts as demand is so high- or they are all in Mexico where these cars are assembled.)

My wife has had the same problem on our 2009 MKX -- very loud - gun shot noise

Have you determined what is causing this and is there a fix??

Same big bang happened to me in my 2009 MKX....what the heck? Does any one know what it is? After I shut the car off and restarted it appeared that everything was ok...but I am baffled. LINCOLN...What happened? I would appreciate any responses if anyone know what it was and what I should do.

thanks!

Sounds to me definitely an amplifier problem. I assume here this is the THX upgraded sound system? There's a lot of electronics in these vehicles (especially the new 2011 model) and if the amp is not on it's own power supply there is probably a safety mechanism built into it to meet THX standards. If there is a sudden surge of power going through the system it could set off the safety and shut the amp off. The 'pop' everyone is hearing is probably coming from the subwoofer as often times when before the amp shuts down the sine wave it sends out can be like this. "D" class amps are famous for this (in subwoofers as that what 'home' subwoofers with built in amps come with - "D" class amps).

This would also explain why when shutting off the engine then restarting the vehicle solves the problem (when an amp goes into protect mode it stays there until you 'reboot' it, and the only way to reboot an car amp without crawling under the dash and disconnecting it is to shut off the engine.

I'm interested in the 2011 model that has even more electronics then your 2009's do. I wonder if this is going to be a problem? I do a lot of highway driving and though not critical to the performance of the vehicle itself, I sure as heck do not want to have to pull off the road, shut off the engine, then turn it back on to get my music.

Has anyone tried just powering off the sound system and turning it back on? What was going on when this happened, (were you turning on overhead lights, turning on high beams, engaging four ways, putting your turn signal on)?
