I have a 94 Town Car signature. The car was very well cared for the previous owner, so it's quite nice. The engine is entirely stock, but I've placed a free flowing exhaust on it. The car isn't much for drag racing due to it's weight and slow take off. But once it gets going, the car has some serious passing power.
My problem is, it's got that four speed transmission with the collum shifter. I've looked into universal four speed shifters. I would like to put one of these in my car. The AOD E tranny shifts to slow on it's own, and I don't like the timing of the shifts. And then of course you have the collum shifter that only have 1st and 2nd gear optional...
I've found these universal shifters for like 70 bucks. But how much would it cost to install in my car? And what would I need to do it myself if the installation was too pricey.

Hi bluemonster and welcome,
These Town Cars are not meant to be speed demons or to produce neck snapping shifts. There are ways to firm up the shifts and such by using controllers from police interceptor models, but don't expect it to be a race car.

What about the famous J-Mod for this series of transmissions? It's a valve-body mod suggested by one of the guys who originally designed this transmission at Ford. It firms up shifts and makes them faster. Just a thought.
